Diversify Social Capital by Investing in Futures our Children’s Future
If you are not familiar in “Wall Street” lingo, the term “futures,” represents a financial contract regarding the buy/sell of physical commodities at a predetermined future date and price. Futures contracts detail the quality and quantity of the underlying asset; they are standardized to facilitate trading on a futures exchange. Some futures contracts may call for physical delivery of the asset while others are settled in cash. To illustrate my point, I want to replace cash with social capital. The central premise of social capital is that social networks have value. Social capital refers to the collective value of all “social networks” [who people know] and the inclinations.
I was so moved by the KHK’s mission, “…to develop leadership skills through youth-led service projects. We empower students to take their passion and turn it into action to make a difference in the lives of other kids,” I had to get involved.
Kids Helping Kids (KHK) is a non-profit founded by Lexi and Jennifer Kelley, a mother and daughter team in 2009. Their organization is the product of an experience Lexi had at just 12 years old. Lexi, was in a motor vehicle accident in January 2009. Through recovery, she received many gestures of goodwill, which inspired her to duplicate the process and captivate a learning tool for the youth.
Today, KHK continues their efforts to encourage many children to do just a little to be that x-factor for someone in need. The first KHK’s project gave kids her age the opportunity to feel the impact, joy and reward of helping others. As the team of volunteers has matured, KHK has also matured, and we are now had over 250 kids from 42 different schools involved in one or more projects.
It was my pleasure volunteering my knowledge of copywriting for print media and marketing to promote the KHK grassroots campaigns. –
Being a mother of two small children, I understand the importance of character development in adolescent.
